San Benito police officers received a Saturday morning surprise when they were called to the 400 block of North Sam Houston Boulevard, where a man had driven his sports utility vehicle (SUV) onto the steps of the Municipal Building.
According to Detective Rogelio Banda of the San Benito Police Department (SBPD), the driver, identified as 20-year-old Paul William Perez, was heading south on Sam Houston early Saturday morning when he fell asleep at the wheel of his 2000 Jeep Cherokee, crashing into a palm tree on the corner of Adele Street and Sam Houston. The impact was such that the driver awoke and found that he had lost control of the vehicle, which was still traveling south, and crashed onto the front steps of the San Benito Municipal Building, a historic landmark that once served as the city’s post office.
