San Benito police assigned to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Task Force arrested a man on Tuesday accused of smuggling marijuana from Mexico into the United States.

Brownsville resident Sergio Gonzalez, 40, is accused of attempting to bring an estimated 42.4 pounds of marijuana hidden inside a spare tire. Gonzalez, according to police and ICE agents, was driving a 2002 Dodge Ram pickup truck and traveling in the northbound lanes of the Veteran’s International Bridge.

Seven bundles of marijuana were reportedly found in Gonzalez’s spare tire upon secondary inspection by a canine unit. The marijuana had an estimated street value of $33,920.
