Team spirit.
This is what San Benito Quarterback Club Secretary Rosie Leal hopes to spread this September through a t-shirt sale designed to spur community support in the Greyhound varsity football squad, not to mention a sense of patriotism.
Ten years ago, Leal said the club designed t-shirts commemorating the Sept. 11, 2001 tragedy. A similar design was employed for new shirts, which displays the American flag made up of purple hands in place of the stars and gold hands in place of the stripes. The text reads “San Benito” atop the image and “United We Stand, Greyhounds” below.
The cause? Leal said the t-shirts, which cost $4.00 to make one, are being sold exclusively at San Benito CISD campuses for $8.00. The club will keep $3.00 from each t-shirt sold as a fundraiser for its end of year football banquet. The club secretary said it’s her goal to raise enough money to fund 10 $1,000 scholarships for as many varsity football players who meet the criteria. Scholarships have previously been in the amount of $500, she said.
The incentive? For each t-shirt sold at a San Benito CISD campus, the school keeps $1.00. “The Veterans Memorial Academy has already sold something like 95 shirts,” Leal said of the enthusiasm expressed by officials at participating campuses.
In fact, Leal said she’s been granted permission by San Benito CISD Superintendent of Schools Antonio G. Limón to sell the shirts at school campuses during her lunch hour.
“We sent out emails to every campus that wanted to participate and sell the t-shirts. I think most are participating. For instance I saw it being advertised at Riverside Middle School already. It’s for a good cause, and it’s scholarship money,” Limón said, adding that all campus names, including Gateway Academy, are also featured on the t-shirt.
For Leal, it’s also a way to help increase attendance at Greyhound football games.
“We don’t have too many people going, so I want to get people involved in attending the out of town games, but more importantly home games since there are only four this year,” Leal said. “We need to support the Mighty Greyhounds. Jacob Puente is doing great as well as all the receivers, and the defense is awesome.”
