Hound logoWESLACO – The date was Friday, Sept. 3, 2010. The score? A heartbreaking 47-6 tally. Heartbreaking because the ’Hounds were on the losing end of that total and the Weslaco East Wildcats walked away with the win at Bobby Morrow Stadium in San Benito.

It was a shock.

But that was then, and now – on Friday, Sept. 2, 2011 – the San Benito Greyhounds have the opportunity to return the favor, this time on Wildcat turf in Weslaco.

Projected to lose, according to some pundits, the ’Hounds walk into Friday’s game the underdogs with much to prove. But after a blistering offensive performance in last week’s scrimmage versus Laredo United and an equally impressive showing by the defense, fans hope San Benito is poised for victory… not to mention a bit of revenge.

Head coach Spencer Gantt, beginning his third season at the helm for San Benito said the secondary, lead by defensive backs Ernie Sandell and Nate Aguirre will be ready. Other defensive standouts include defensive tackle Guillermo Covarrubias, outside linebacker Andrew Montalvo, and defensive end Adrian Zuniga, not to mention outside linebacker Enrique Rodriguez.

On the offensive side of the ball, quarterback Jacob Puente and running back Arturo Coronado have been coming into their own, as well as offensive tackle Greg Rodriguez supplying the protection.

The Wildcats, meanwhile, are once again projected to take 32-4A on the strength of running backs Juan Murillo and Justin Flores sprinting behind offensive tackle Carlos Cuellar, offensive guard Edgar Trejo, and offensive lineman Christian Garcia.

The Weslaco East defense fields linebackers Chris Belmares, John Adame, Orlando Fuentes, Martin Rendon, and Albert Hernandez as well as cornerback Marco Navarro, defensive end Efrain Alvarez, and defensive tackle Jose Cavazos.

Indeed, Friday’s game is shaping up to be a good one as the first game of San Benito’s season. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco.
