At their last home game of the 2011 baseball season, the San Benito Greyhounds battled the Brownsville Porter Cowboys until the final plays of the game but weren’t able to claim the victory.
The Greyhounds held the Cowboys to one run with stellar pitching by Jacob Puente and great defense all the way around. The ’Hounds weren’t able to come through offensively and despite getting hits they could not bring runs in and left several runners in scoring position, losing 4-1.
Their biggest inning came in the fourth when Homer Longoria got on base with a walk and then stole second leaving Adan Guzman up to bat, Guzman then hit a strategically placed bunt toward third that moved Longoria in the same direction, the Porter first baseman let the throw get past him which gave Longoria the opportunity to score.
The Greyhounds and the Cowboys kept dueling to break the tie but both teams weren’t able to until the top of the seventh, when Porter past the ’Hounds and scored three runs. The Cowboys ended the seventh with a great play by their centerfielder when Guzman hit a beautiful shallow line drive.
Greyhound Head Coach Xavier Acosta was proud of his team despite the loss, saying, “We played great tonight. Our pitching and defense was fantastic, unfortunately we couldn’t get the big hits. It’s something we’ve been struggling all season with but this combination of freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors all came together and fought hard to defend their colors.”
The Greyhounds are set to finish the season off Tuesday when they travel to Brownsville to play the Hanna Eagles. Despite their efforts the Greyhounds will finish in last place.
“We are in last place but we’re the best last place team you will ever see. We did a great job of coming out and fighting hard and defending our Greyhound colors, these boys have a lot of pride. They gave playoff contenders a hard game and I couldn’t be prouder,” said Acosta.
