This past Tuesday, San Benito baseball fans were once again a part of something special.
Fans had the opportunity to contribute to a local fundraiser for senior student athlete Steven Perez from Brownsville Hanna, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Raffle tickets were available to purchase to help raise money that would be given to the student’s family next week when the Greyhounds travel to Brownsville to face off against the Hanna Eagles.
The Greyhound Homerun Club, organized by Madelyn Vallejo, collected donations in similar efforts earlier in the year.
Sonia De la Cruz of the Homerun Club stated that when she attended a game in Brownsville she heard from parents of the student’s misfortune, and decided to act willingly to help. “The parents and I decided to hold a raffle, so we went around local businesses and were able to get most to donate,” said De la Cruz. From local restaurants donating dinner plates to sportswear stores giving away baseball caps and even baseballs, it was clear many local businesses showed their generosity to help out with this cause.
Also to help with the cause, special guests Miss Brownsville, Miss San Benito, along with Little Miss San Benito all attended the game to show their support and to help with the raffle. All three were all moved by what the parents were trying to do for this tragedy and helped out the best they could.
“I know he is sick and we just want him to feel better,” said Little Miss Lauren Paris Salinas, who was helping sell the raffle tickets.
The raffle was held at the end of the fifth inning where all the prizes were handed out to the winners.
The first was held back in early March where the parents were able to raise $450, which will be added to the second raffle’s earnings and will be given to the family of Steven Perez during next week’s game.
