Friday night’s game against the Brownsville Lopez Lobos was pushed up an hour to avoid any potential rain delays due to the effects from Hurricane Patricia. Well, physically both teams showed up on time, mentally however, is a different story.

Aside from taking their opening drive 35 yards to tie the game at 7, Lopez only managed to squeeze out 36 yards (and one turnover) the rest of the half. San Benito cruised to a 45-7 victory despite numerous penalties from both teams. And it could have been a lot worse if Head Coach Dan Gomez hadn’t pulled his starters at halftime.
San Benito pretty much sealed the game right before the end of the first half when quarterback J.R. Gaitan found wide-out Jorge Cantu down the seam for a beautiful 55-yard scoring strike. That play, plus a 14-yard touchdown pass to E.J. Barron highlighted what was an exceptional first half for the senior play-caller, who also added a two yard touchdown run early in the game. The Greyhounds took a 31-7 lead into the intermission and outgained the Lobos 290-71 in total yards for the first two quarters.
