SB forces three games in area

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS—The San Benito Lady Greyhounds ended their softball season following a series loss to the East Central Lady Hornets during the second round of the Class 6A Division I playoffs.

The Lady ‘Hounds forced a third game after evening the three-game series and winning Game 2 by an 8-5 score at Calallen High School.

San Benito collected 10 hits in the game that started at noon. It scored a couple of runs in the top of the first inning, and never trailed. East Central scored a run in the second inning, but later in the fourth, the Lady

‘Hounds iced the contest with five additional runs.

East Central earned nine hits, but couldn’t do anything else offensively in its attempt to close the series after two games.

Unfortunately for San Benito, the losses came by large margins. In Game 1 played Friday, May 2 at Gregory-Portland High School, the San Antonio-based school defeated San Benito, 11-3.

The Lady ’Hounds didn’t have trouble scoring early as they led 2-0 after one inning. In fact, they led 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning, but the Lady Hornets countered with five runs in the bottom half to take the lead for good. They would add six runs to close out all scoring.

San Benito had six hits in the series opener.

The third and decisive game, played Saturday, May 3 at Calallen 30 minutes following the second game, went the way of the Lady Hornets, 16-0.

To advance to the second round, San Benito beat Edinburg North in a bi-district game, 14-6.

San Benito ends its season with an 18-13-1 record. East Central, which improved to 20-11, went on to the third round to play Lake Travis.
