’Hounds display great effort

Despite a valiant effort to advance to the second round of the postseason, the San Benito Greyhounds lost their bi-district bid to the Weslaco Panthers last Thursday.

Their foes needed three games to end San Benito’s season, which concluded with a 12-16 record.
Weslaco improved to 19-10-1 on the year.

Game 1, played in Weslaco on Thursday, May 1, went the way of the Panthers, who scored two runs each in the bottom of the second and fourth innings. San Benito avoided the shutout by scoring two runners in the sixth. The team had five hits, but Weslaco caused more damage with its eight hits.

Mauro Arizpe had two RBIs. Gabriel Covarrubias and Aiden Barrera each had a run.

Games 2 and 3 were played at San Benito Friday, May 2. The second game began at 5 p.m.

The ’Hounds dominated the second game by handing the Panthers a 4-0 loss. San Benito made the most of its five hits to notch the victory.

The third game, played 30 minutes after the second game, saw Weslaco take the series by winning, 9-4, in extra innings.

The Panthers scored four runs in the top of the third inning, and the ‘Hounds responded with two runs in the fourth. San Benito tied the game in its final at-bat, scoring a couple of runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning.

Weslaco, however, closed the series with a decisive five runs in the 11th inning.

Weslaco moved on to play in the area round against Buda Johnson.
