Board recognizes students

The San Benito Consolidated Independent School District (SBCISD) Board of Trustees held a regular meeting on Weds., March 19, 2025, at the John F. Barron Administration Building.

Alexandro Huerta, a fifth-grade student at Dr. Raul Garza Jr. STEAM Academy, delivered the pledge of allegiance. Fifth grader Sophia Ramirez, also from Dr. Raul Garza Jr. STEAM Academy, delivered the invocation.

The board recognized the boys’ and girls’ wrestling teams for San Benito High School and Veterans Memorial Academy. The girls’ team won first place at the Rumble by the Border Tournament, and the boys’ team competed at a state competition in Austin.

Students from multiple schools in the district were recognized for their performance at the 2024-2025 Battle of the Books Competition. The board recognized the students who earned a chair in the SBCISD Middle School All-Region Band and student placement in the San Benito High School Band.

The board recognized students who placed in the 2025 Regional Chess Championships. The district’s Communication Department was recognized for earning gold and silver-level achievements.

Cathy Abrego presented the District Annual Report. She covered a guide that explained the extensive report, which is available on the district website.

Mary Maney also thanked the custodial staff for their work during spring break. She thanked the board for increasing the stipend for the after-school programs and for making the online board meetings “more pleasant” to listen to online. SBCISD Superintendent of Schools Alfredo Perez said the district’s five-year plan should be prepared by May.

On the academic services consent agenda, the board approved the clinical education affiliation agreement between SBCISD and Cardiovascular Specialists. The board also approved the service agreement between SBCISD and Capturing Kids’ Hearts.

An amendment to the memorandum of understanding between the district and the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office was approved. The board approved memorandums of understanding between the district and Texas State Technical College Dual Credit Program, Neighbors In Need of Services, Inc. Head Start/Early Head Start Program and services, and Teach for America Future Shock Program.

For the consent agenda for business and finance, the board approved the cash account, comparison of revenue and expenditures, tax collection report, and check disbursements for February 2025. The district approved bid proposals for financial advisory and external audit firm services. Gifts and bequests for the 2024-2025 school year were approved. Budget amendments and purchases of over $50,000 were also approved.

The consent agenda for administration approved revisions to the 2024-2025 compensation plan. The board was given a ballot to vote on a candidate to serve on the Region One ESC Board of Directors. The board approved the resolution for the Rifle-Resistant Body Armor Grant and the Feb 12 board meeting minutes.
The board proceeded with items regarding contracts across the district’s administration as discussed in the executive session.
