The San Benito Greyhounds, after successfully competing in their own baseball tournament last weekend, moved to 4-3 on the season.
San Benito Head Coach Ramiro Partida, Jr. was pleased with his players and their outcome, especially in the championship game.
“As for our tournament, our kids played well. We did well in all three phases – pitching, defense, and offense,” Partida said.
The ‘Hounds defeated Donna North by a 6-5 score and Marine Military Academy, 9-7.
They went on to overwhelm Raymondville, 12-1, behind a two-hitter from a couple of pitchers, Robby Leal and Josh Baez.
“Our pitching was good in the tournament, but for our championship game our pitching was excellent,” Partida said.
Leal pitched five solid innings and Baez finished the sixth, he said.
Stat leaders in hits are Justin Montemayor (8) and Victor Rodriguez (6); leaders in RBIs is Montemayor (8), and Ethan Garza (3).
“Our players are starting to buy in our offense philosophy. Get’em on, Get’em over, and Get’em in,” Partida said.
San Benito will compete in the Edinburg Tournament this weekend. The team has games slated against McAllen Nikki Rowe and Edinburg Vela on Thursday, March 6, and Sharyland Friday, March 8, and Corpus Christi King on Saturday, March 9.
