BROWNSVILLE, TX —The San Benito Greyhound Varsity Soccer Team was able to hang on to its postseason aspirations after defeating the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers on the road, 3-2, Tuesday.
The Greyhounds were able to avenge a 4-2 loss at home against this same Vets team.
Since losing three consecutive matches to Los Fresnos, Vets, and Harlingen, the ’Hounds have won two of three.
They shutout Brownsville Hanna, 3-0, but lost last week to Los Fresnos again, 3-1. The win against Vets this week didn’t come easy as the ‘Hounds needed every minute to come away with a District 32-6A win.
With the Chargers trailing by two goals late in the second half, they continued to pressure San Benito goalie Francisco Garcia, who thwarted off shots on goal.
“He played really well, and our defense did, too, everyone did really well getting this win we really needed, ‘Hounds Head Coach William Huerta said. “We want to finish the season on a good note before going to the playoffs.”
San Benito will need to avenge a loss to Harlingen (3-4 in district) next week to win two consecutive matches for the first time since January.
San Benito is in fourth place with a 3-4 record. The team is 8-7-2 overall.
Vets fell to 5-3 with the loss, but is still in second place. Los Fresnos will take the district title and is 7-0.
In the Vets match, San Benito’s Jiovanni Najera scored two goals and Everardo Escobedo one, respectively.
The Lady ‘Hounds lost to 6-0 to Vets. They were able to stay close with their district rival like their previous match which came in a 6-5 loss.
San Benito fell to 0-7 with the loss.
