CCSO: Man falls asleep, mid-road

A 19-year-old driver of a vehicle is facing charges after Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies allege he fell asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle he was driving to stop in the middle of the road.

According to a Cameron County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) report, on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at about 6:30 a.m., Cameron County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the intersection of FM 1421 and Janet Circle in San Benito, regarding a vehicle that was stationary on the middle of the roadway with a male subject allegedly asleep at the wheel.

Upon arrival, sheriff’s deputies located the vehicle and observed the lone occupant to indeed be a male subject said to be asleep in the driver’s seat.

Sheriff’s deputies reportedly took the keys from the ignition and allegedly observed beer bottles inside the vehicle, according to the CCSO report. Sheriff’s deputies then made contact with the operator, later identified as 19-year-old Eric Moreno, whom deputies say showed visible signs of intoxication.

Sheriff’s deputies administered a battery of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and determined Moreno did not have use of his normal mental or physical faculties to operate a motor vehicle due to the alleged consumption of alcohol, the CCSO report reads.

An Intoxilizer exam revealed Moreno’s blood alcohol concentration to allegedly be over twice the legal limit.
Sheriff’s deputies arrested Eric Moreno and transported him to the Carrizales-Rucker Cameron County Detention Center in Olmito pending arraignment. Moreno was charged with Driving While Intoxicated; TPC: 49.04, a Class “B” Misdemeanor.
