The recent regular board of trustees meeting of the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) covered a range of agenda items, including student achievements, recognitions, and district priorities.
The meeting began with a roll call to confirm the attendance of all board members. Subsequently, the board acknowledged outstanding students from Gateway Graduation Academy, emphasizing the district’s commitment to providing alternative pathways for academic success.

Recognitions included former San Benito High School students turned teachers, Dr. Stacy Gonzalez and Dr. Roland Garcia, for obtaining doctoral degrees in Educational Leadership and Business and Leadership Studies, respectively.

Six San Benito High School choir students were recognized as Allstate Vocalists, highlighting achievements in the Santo Greyhound Corral. Leo Martinez, director of choirs, commended the program’s commitment to maintaining high standards in choral music education.

Acknowledgment was given to the San Benito Greyhound football team, praising players and coaches, including Head Coach and Athletic Director Dan Gomez, Defensive Coordinator Johnny Garza, and Offensive Coordinator Benny Ellison.

Financial stability was addressed with the board noting 153 days of cash on hand as a buffer against unforeseen challenges. During the public comment section, Mary Manie expressed appreciation for the district’s financial prudence.

While specific details about bonds or construction projects were not explicitly mentioned in open session, the meeting underscored the district’s commitment to robust extracurricular programs, particularly in choir and football. Additionally, recognition of Christmas stipends and gifts for employees highlighted the district’s efforts to appreciate its staff.

Board members expressed gratitude for teamwork, community support, and commitment to student success. The superintendent expressed appreciation for the school board’s leadership, vision, and advocacy for quality education. Recognition of School Board Appreciation Month was noted, expressing gratitude for the board’s role in shaping the future of students and the community.

The meeting transitioned to agenda items, including the approval of various consent items related to academic services, business finance, and administration.

Notable items included the approval of class size exemption, service agreements, agreements with external organizations, cash reports, budget comparisons, tax collection reports, check disbursements, federal funds comparison reports, investment reports, and various contract approvals.

One significant proposal discussed was the approval of windstorm insurance for property and content coverage. Detailed discussions were held regarding market conditions, coverage needs, and the potential impact on the budget.

The board also discussed and approved the installation of forced entry resistance film on windows throughout the district. The film selection followed a bidding process, with the chosen vendor recommended by Region One School Safety.

In response to a question about testing the film, the district expressed confidence in the vendor’s recommendations and suggested obtaining videos showcasing the film’s impact. Additionally, discussions about the warranty of the film and the timeline for installation were addressed.

A motion was made and carried to approve the purchase and installation of the forced entry resistance film. The board also discussed the potential need for an additional day to make up for a weather-related closure but decided that employees would be paid for the missed day without the requirement for a makeup day.

The board engaged in executive sessions discussing employment, resignations, retirements, terminations, and the renewal of term contracts for administrators. The board also approved probationary contracts for administrators for the 2023-2024 school year.
