The first and only MLS GO Youth Soccer League currently playing in the state of Texas opens its inaugural season in San Benito on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at Stookey Park.
Opening ceremonies get underway at 8 a.m. and action hits the pitch around 8:30 a.m.
More than 30 teams in five age divisions comprise the league, which was approved by the San Benito City Commission in August 2023. MLS GO is Major League Soccer’s recreational youth soccer program, with the mission of creating an inclusive and elevated experience for all participants.
City of San Benito Recreation Coordinator Amanda Lara said the City first began petitioning MLS GO to come to the Resaca City in July of last year after speaking with league representatives at a sports summit in Atlanta, Georgia. Shortly after the City Commission’s approval, registration began with more than 330 children ultimately signing up.
Some of the teams that will play on Saturday include FC Dallas, Austin FC, Inter Miami CF, Houston Dynamo FC and Orlando City SC.
Stookey Park is located at 528 N. Stookey Rd. between Business Highway 77 and East Stenger St. in San Benito.
According to MLS GO’s website, fun and affordability are at the heart of MLS GO with the ambition of enabling more kids to play soccer.
MLS GO is offered to all children ages 4-14. Whether destined for the professional ranks or looking to get their first experience in the sport, MLS GO is the first step in the pathway where the league invites all to learn fundamental soccer skills and develop a lasting love of the game.
By offering local communities a structured introductory soccer program with connections to a developmental pathway, MLS GO enabling greater access to the sport — seeking to remove any barriers to participating in the game which is loved by millions worldwide.
