The last decade has seen Greyhound athletics soar to new heights as just about every team across a wide range of sports is experiencing high levels of success.
With multiple athletes earning athletic scholarships every year, San Benito has developed a reputation as a hub for premier athletes in the Valley. Even with that rich history, one athlete just hit a record setting milestone with more than a full year left in her high school career.
Angelina Reyes, the sensational hooper who was already a back-to-back first team all-district selection entering her junior campaign, was honored with a special ceremony for reaching 1,000 career points in a San Benito uniform.
The athletic guard became one of the youngest players in Valley history to hit the mark earlier this year, surpassing the milestone in the third game of her junior season. Lady ’Hound Head Basketball Coach Abel Moreno helped present a banner in recognition of her achievement before the first home game of the season this past Tuesday.
“It means a lot to reach this milestone, and it feels amazing to see my scoring lead to wins,” said Reyes. “Being young and being able to have this kind of impact and ability is a blessing.”
Since her debut season, the Lady ’Hounds have gone from a fringe playoff team to district championship contenders. Reyes and several other underclassmen are the main reason for the recent revival of the program.
While a large chunk of the Lady ’Hounds’ offense has ran through Reyes the last two seasons, a roster full of gritty defenders and athletic shooters has turned San Benito into one of the top girls’ programs in all of South Texas.
The Lady ’Hounds’ bid for back-to-back playoff appearances is off to a promising start this season with Reyes’ scoring output among the top in the Valley. Entering Tuesday night’s home opener against Brownsville St. Joseph, San Benito won seven of its last eight games with Reyes scoring nearly 20 points a night.
