For years, Angelina Reyes looked up to her big sisters and their athletic prowess.
As the youngest of seven children, including four older sisters, Reyes was able to learn a little from each of her siblings. Her older sister, Blanch, was a star player for the Lady ’Hounds’ basketball team in 2008.
In fact, each of her older sisters has made an impact on San Benito athletics. Despite being the youngest in the family, Reyes is looking to make history that nobody else, including her sisters, can claim.
Entering her junior season, Reyes has the chance to be the first Lady ’Hound in school history to hit 1,000 career points before the district schedule starts. As a varsity starter since her freshman season, Reyes would also be one of the youngest RGV players to ever hit the mark. An exclusive club normally reserved for high scoring seniors, reaching the 1k benchmark is a crowning achievement. Reyes joining the club at her age will be nothing short of spectacular.
“You could see early on that she was going to be special, but she has really worked on her craft and [has] proven to be one of the best basketball players to ever play for the Lady ’Hounds,” said longtime Lady ‘Hounds head coach Abel Moreno. “Her improvement last year was noticeable on an already impressive first year. The sky is the limit for her, and I know she has higher expectations for herself than anyone else.”
Reyes nearly doubled her scoring average as a sophomore, jumping from 8.5 in her debut campaign to a district leading 16.7 this past season.
Over 74 career games, the youngster has totaled 941 points, despite sitting out several whole quarters in her career for various reasons. Going off her scoring average from last season, Reyes should hit the 1,000-point mark by her fourth game, which will likely be at one of the many tournaments San Benito attends in its pre-season.
