RGV FOOTBALL PREVIEW
SAN BENITO, TX—It’s been a decade now since San Benito chose relatively unknown Dan Garza to lead its football team, giving him his first head coaching gig after several years as a top assistant. While Garza has led the ’Hounds to ten straight playoff appearances and several deep playoff runs, there are still some questions heading into year 11.
Despite posting a 29-13 record over the last four years, with four straight second place finishes in district, the Greyhounds are 0-4 in that time span against their top nemesis- the Harlingen Cardinals. In addition to their struggles with Harlingen, San Benito has failed to advance past the third round of the playoffs in their four opportunities since Gomez took over the program. Boasting one of the most talented and complete rosters in all of South Texas this season, the pressure will be on Gomez and the Greyhounds to break through in a big way.
“The talent is there and the experience is there, but we need to put it together for an entire season,” said Gomez. “Obviously, the Battle of the Arroyo is a big game and is on everyone’s minds. Our guys have a lot of pride and they understand what that game means to the community, but our focus is on one game at a time.”
Leading the charge for San Benito’s offense will be incoming senior running back Fabian Garcia. A top candidate for district MVP, Garcia is coming off the first individual 2,000-yard rushing season since Randy Reza in 2005.
