RGV FOOTBALL PREVIEW

LOS FRESNOS, TX—With one of the youngest cores of starters in the RGV, the Los Fresnos Falcons will be looking to finally breakthrough in the race for district 32-6A supremacy.

Despite four straight playoff appearances, the Falcons haven’t finished higher than third place since 2017 – a trend that seems destined to change as they enter the third year under former Los Fresnos alumni David Cantu.

As a Falcons assistant coach in 2003, and the inaugural head coach of Brownsville Veterans Memorial, Cantu brought a career record of 67-45 to Los Fresnos with five playoff appearances to his name. In just two seasons at the helm for the Falcons, Cantu has an overall record of 14-9 with two playoff victories.

Cantu put his fingerprints on the football program early on, choosing freshman Robert Pineda to be his starting quarterback at the start of last year. It was the first time in school history that a freshman started at quarterback, and one year later, Cantu is just as confident with the choice.

“You could just see his athleticism pop right away and he’s the ultimate competitor on the football field,” Cantu said of Pineda. “Getting that varsity experience was huge for him last year and I think he has a chance to be one of the best players in the Valley this season.”

A true dual threat quarterback, Pineda was nothing short of sensational in 2022. The youngster put up nearly 1,400 yards through the air while completing 66% of his passes with a sterling 15-3 touchdown to interception ratio.

The youngster also led the team in rushing with 908 yards and ten touchdowns. While the offense undoubtedly is built around Pineda, Cantu prides himself on running a multi-faceted offense that can attack with different players.
