SINTON—Despite a brief scare, one of the greatest sports seasons in school history will continue after the Lady ’Hounds captured their first Area championship since 2018.

San Benito’s aura of invincibility was challenged in the best-of-three series after dropping Game 1 – their first loss since March 2 – but a heroic performance by superstars Amira Rodriguez and Emily Delgado paved the way for the two biggest wins of the season for the Purple and Gold.

The Brennan Lady Bears came into the series on a nine-game winning streak and with a 21-8 overall record after finishing as the runner-up for District 29-6A. Easily one of the most talented teams San Benito has faced all season, Brennan showed its grit early by shutting out the prolific lineup of Lady ’Hound batters. Coming into the game averaging better than 10 runs per game, San Benito boasted one of the most high-powered offenses in the state.

Not only did the Lady Bears hold San Benito to just three runs, they put up five scores of their own to take Game 1. While a two run loss may not seem like all that much, it registered as the second biggest loss of the season for San Benito.

“It was a little bit of unfamiliar territory for the girls with the way our season has gone, but I think it gave them some extra motivation,” Head Coach Elias Martinez said about the Game 1 loss. “They knew what had to be done, and they got the job done.”
