PHARR—A once promising season came to a disappointing end this past weekend when the Greyhound baseball team was swept by 31-6A champs PSJA High in the first round of the playoffs. The two losses pushed San Benito’s losing streak to six while their 16-16 final record gives third-year head coach Ram Partida his first non-winning season.

Despite playing one of the most impressive teams in the Valley to open the post-season, San Benito did manage to make it a competitive series. Game 1 saw the teams caught in a 2-2 tie heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. The 22-5 PSJA Bears closed out the game with five runs over the final three innings to come away with a 7-2 win in a game that was much closer than that.

Game 2 was, in fact, much closer as the Greyhounds found themselves down 4-3 entering the sixth inning. Neither team managed any more runs and Partida’s squad suffered a third straight first-round defeat.

The sour end shouldn’t be enough to discount an otherwise impressive campaign this team compiled. The first month of the season saw the ’Hounds go 11-4 while competing at some of the most prestigious tournaments in the Valley. A pair of tournament championships gave San Benito considerable buzz around the Valley that has been a long time coming.

“It wasn’t the end result that we wanted, but we had some success this year, and our program is really just starting to grow and experience some sustained form of success,” Partida said. “I think we can come back stronger next year if we continue to put the work in.”
