SAN ANTONIO—Back in 2017, the San Benito Greyhounds had one of the best seasons in Valley football history. The team went undefeated in the regular season, running through local teams for a district championship. San Benito continued its dominance in the post-season, putting up 94 points in its first two playoff victories.

A central figure on that team was Defensive Coordinator Michael Mull, a San Benito native and former standout athlete at San Benito High School. Mull’s defense was so superb, it earned him a couple of interviews, which he parlayed into a job with the rebuilding Taft Raiders.

In his five years at his second school, Mull appeared to be instrumental in a dramatic change of culture that saw the Raiders make the playoffs for the first time in half a decade.

“Seeing the progress of those guys was so rewarding and it’s one of the reasons I enjoy being a coach so much,” said Mull. “It’s always been about more than football for me as a coach.”

After another playoff run this past season, Mull’s profile rose so much in San Antonio that he was a finalist for the head coaching job at Luther Burbank High School in San Antonio, and this past Monday, the football program officials announced they will proceed with Mull at the helm.

The Burbank Bulldogs are a 5A team that is coming off its first playoff appearance in three years and compiled a 7-4 overall record. Mull is expected to install a culture similar to the one he helped develop in San Benito.
