San Benito has long been viewed as one of the top athletic programs in all of South Texas. From a dominating football team to the record-setting softball squad, San Benito seems to find itself near the top of whatever sport it’s competing in.
While the football and softball teams have established themselves as powerhouses in their respective arena, the Greyhound wrestling team has been making its own case as one of the best in the Valley over the last two years.
San Benito, led by former Greyhound wrestler Balde Olivarez III, just wrapped up another successful regular season. In addition to multiple tournament championships throughout the year, San Benito showed its pure talent by running through the district meet last week.
A total of nine Greyhound wrestlers managed to finish in the top five of their weight class to advance to Regionals in San Antonio this week. The jaw-dropping total comes just one year after Olivarez saw a record 13 wrestlers advance to the post-season.
“I honestly feel like we’ve had the talent to compete with anyone in the Valley for a few years now, we just needed to show up when it matters,” said Olivarez. “Now that we’ve kind of established ourselves in the wrestling world, people are starting to recognize us for our success.”
