With the regular season officially over for girls’ basketball, San Benito can finally say its playoff drought has been snapped.

Despite a late-season slump that saw them drop three of their final four games, the Lady ’Hounds mustered just enough magic to punch their post-season ticket for the first time in five years.

It was a roller coaster of a season for longtime head coach Abel Moreno – one that included a five-game losing streak to start the season, followed by a string of 15 wins in 16 games – but the Lady ’Hounds managed to accomplish the first goal set by Moreno at the end of last year.

“We knew that this core of girls could be very special after just missing out on the playoffs last season, so making the playoffs was an expected goal of ours this year,” said Moreno. “I’m proud of the fight this team showed all season, but now we need to focus on our next opponent…We can pat ourselves on the back when the season ends.”

While San Benito was blown out in its season finale against second-ranked Weslaco, it was able to cement its spot in the playoffs by taking down Los Fresnos in its penultimate game of the season. Despite finishing the season with identical 5-5 district records, San Benito swept the season series against Los Fresnos, giving the purple and gold the number three spot in District 32-6A.
