The magical ride goes on for the San Benito basketball team as the Greyhounds continued their undefeated rampage through one of the toughest districts in the Valley.
With Tuesday’s 55-34 drubbing of a Weslaco team fighting for a final playoff spot, San Benito pushed their win streak to eight and have all but wrapped up their first outright district title in over a decade.
With just two games left in the season, the ’Hounds have already clinched at least a share of the district crown and are eager to enter the playoffs for the first time under head coach Luis Garza.
Tuesday’s win over the Panthers was a welcome return to the customary double-digit Greyhound victories, after just squeaking by the second-ranked Los Fresnos Falcons. It was a game that was never in question, as Chris Thrailkill and Deanthony Mireless continued their breakout seasons.
“We’re only getting stronger as the season continues, and I think we’re seeing a team that trusts in each other because every single one of them cares more about the team than themselves,” said Garza.
“They’ve all bought into the program, and we’re witnessing something special. This is one of the most talented teams I’ve ever had as a coach, but their success is coming from unselfish play more than individual talent.”
