Lady ’Hounds slump puts playoffs in jeopardy

Despite a late season rut that has seen them drop three of their last four contests, the Lady ’Hounds basketball team still looks poised to make their first playoff game since the 2017 season.

Despite back-to-back lopsided defeats, San Benito is currently sitting in the final playoff spot for District 32-6A and with just two games left in the season, it would take a historic breakdown for the Lady ’Hounds to miss the post-season this year.

After a shocking nine-point loss to Rivera last week, the Lady Raiders are now just two games away from stealing a spot in the tournament, though it would require the seasoned Lady ’Hounds to lose their final four games. While that remains a possibility, with two of the top three teams in the district remaining on the schedule, Rivera would also have to win both of their remaining games.

“We dug ourselves into this hole by losing a couple of games we should have won, but we expect to get back on track with our next game,” said longtime head coach Abel Moreno. “We have all the talent in the world, we just need to focus and execute.”

San Benito followed up their upset defeat against Rivera with a brutal 25-52 thrashing by the 21-10 Lady Cardinals. Harlingen has been one of the more talented teams in the Valley over the last few years. The lack of competition in the game is worrisome, especially with the post-season less than two weeks away.
