With just a handful of games left in the season, the San Benito Greyhound basketball team has asserted itself as the cream of the crop in District 32-6A and have already begun to lap the competition.
With a thrilling 43-36 steamrolling of the Harlingen Cardinals in front of a packed home crowd, the ’Hounds now boast a perfect 6-0 district record that includes a sweep of the first round of district games as well as two wins over the rival ’Cards.
In its latest victory, San Benito methodically crawled back from a hefty 11 point first quarter deficit. By the halftime break, the ’Hounds had cut the lead to just three points, but the battle was far from over.
Harlingen came out of the break determined to walk away with a win and again pushed the lead to double digits midway through the third period.
With major contributions from Chris Thrailkill and Deanthony Mireless, however, San Benito was able to tie the game early in the fourth. Thrailkill and Mireless led the offense with 13 points apiece and the Greyhound defense took care of the rest, holding the high powered Cardinals to just six points in the final quarter.
Despite missing out on the playoffs last year, the ’Hounds – who are now in year two under head coach Luis Garza – are currently running away with the district crown and sit one win away from claiming an early playoff spot.
