With football season in the rear view a handful of senior Greyhounds were able to add one more chapter to their playing careers.

Five San Benito gridiron stars were selected for the annual East vs West RGVCA All-Star game that was held in Edinburg last Saturday night. The showcase has been the premier Valley All-Star game for over a decade as top athletes from all school divisions are chosen by the RGV’s Coaches Association.

After a record-setting defensive unit led the way for a deep playoff run, linebacker Mariano Garcia, free safety DeAnthony Mireless, and returner Homer Quiroz were joined by receiver Rodney Rodriguez and Offensive Lineman Frank Medina in representing San Benito at the Valley-wide event.

The game was a defensive battle as the limited practice time for each squad was evident. With San Benito players representing the East, they were able to pull out a 10-9 victory with every Greyhound player seeing the field for multiple snaps.

The five selections for San Benito was tied for the most of any school in the Valley.

For Garcia, it is just the latest accolade for one of the most productive defensive seasons in recent memory.

After blowing up for 127 tackles, 8.5 sacks, and 28 TFL’s, the senior captain was named 32-6A Defensive MVP and was eventually named to the All-State Honorable Mention list. Mireless has also enjoyed a stellar football career with back-to-back unanimous All-District selections.
