From new developments in the city’s economy to controversies surrounding its politics, San Benito has seen a wide range of stories that have shaped the community and made headlines. This article delves into the top five stories that defined 2022, providing the facts and figures of surrounding these events.
1. Janie Lopez becomes state representative
In the November General Election, San Benito’s own Janie Lopez was elected as District 37’s state representative, amassing 20,418 total votes, defeating Harlingen businessman and her Democrat opponent Luis Villareal, who tallied 18,963 votes.
Lopez’s win in the District 37 race was her first time running as state representative, although she was not new to electoral victories, having amassed the most votes of any candidate when elected to the SBCISD school board in November 2020. During her historic state bid, Lopez ran a Republican, a rare win for Republicans in the Valley.
Building a coalition of community members and statewide stakeholders, Lopez and her team ran a grassroots campaign that focused on issues such as lowering property taxes, securing communities, improving local infrastructure, and providing economic opportunity.
2. Carman resigns from SBCISD
Dr. Nate Carman was named the lone finalist of Socorro ISD on February 21, 2022, leading to his resignation from SBCISD in March. His resignation launched the district into a search for a new superintendent.
Carman officially began his duties as the SBCISD Superintendent of Schools on September 4, 2017, after being named the lone finalist by the SBCISD Board of Trustees on August 8, 2017. Prior, he had served as superintendent at Teague ISD since 2013.
3. Theresa Servellon named Superintendent
Following Carman’s resignation, San Benito CISD board members voted to name Theresa Servellon as the lone finalist for the Superintendent of Schools position on August 18.
