After building up a tremendous amount of hype with a historic non-district run, the San Benito Lady ’Hounds continued their superb season with back-to-back district victories to kick off 2023.

By closing out 2022 with a 26-point victory over PSJA, the Lady ’Hounds notched their 18th non-district victory on the season. Not only is that a school record, it is one more than their total from the entire 2021 season.

Still, non-district games do not effect playoff spots and Head Coach Abel Moreno was eager to see his team carry its inspired play into the district season. With the first two of a 10 game slate in the books, San Benito has more than met the call.

“They’ve been able to lean on each other through adversity all season and I think you’re starting to see the team really hit their stride at the right time,” said Moreno. “Every game has been a different girl stepping up to make the difference… we definitely have the talent to compete with anyone in the Valley.”

While sophomore Angelina Reyes has been the cornerstone of the San Benito offense all season, the young guard exploded in the district opener against the Hanna Lady Eagles. Reyes got hot early and was able to take over the game in all phases, finishing with 32 points, eight steals, and six rebounds.

Senior Ava Garza pitched in six points and five steals while Jasmine Martinez added five points with her seven steals. With a whopping 29 team steals, Hanna was blown out of the water, ultimately falling to San Benito by a score of 56-22.
