Finding a permanent home for the San Benito History Museum remains in question after this week’s meeting of the San Benito City Commission, but supporters of the museum believe there is a solution.
The city commission discussed the issue in a lengthy closed-door session during the Tuesday, Dec. 6 meeting but no action was taken because of the confusion surrounding the situation.
The agenda item was to direct city attorney Mark Sossi to prepare a facility use agreement concerning the more recently built structure occupied by the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum on Heywood, adjacent to the Community Building which housed the San Benito Historical Museum, the Conjunto Hall of Fame and Museum and the Freddy Fender Museum.
Instead, the commission directed San Benito Mayor Rick Guerra to hold talks with a group called Friends of the Museum in an attempt to reach another agreement before moving ahead.
“I know what the answer is,” the mayor responded, “but nobody wants to take any further action on what direction you want us to take.”
Commissioner Carol Lynn Sanchez said she couldn’t vote on the issue because there wasn’t anything to vote for.
The inaction took place after two concerned citizens, who support getting a permanent home for the history museum, addressed the commission, saying the situation has been at a standstill for years, although the city received funds from a federal agency for a project to bring all the city’s museums under one roof – referring to the building occupied by the cultural museum, adding that there was an umbrella originally encompassing the Texas Conjunto Hall of Fame & Museum, The San Benito History Museum and the Freddy Fender Museum.
