Last Thursday, San Benito CISD board members voted to name Theresa Servellon as the lone finalist for the SBCISD Superintendent of Schools position, which had been vacant since Dr. Nate Carman’s departure in early March.

However, not all members were on board with the decision.

Trustee Orlando Lopez, who had voted in opposition to Servellon in March, was opposed to what he described as a limited search process.

“Going local really hindered the opportunity to get somebody with a lot of experience; as we all know, Ms. Servellon doesn’t have any experience as a superintendent,” Lopez said. “When we were on our search and found Dr. Carman, we went with a firm that was statewide and selective.”

After voting to name Servellon Interim Superintendent in March, the school board discussed hiring the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) to conduct the search for a permanent Superintendent in April.

Later that month, board members voted to open up the search with other firms. However, in July, the board voted to advertise locally as proposed by Board President Ramiro Moreno in order to speed up the decision as the start of the school year neared.
