Rio Grande Valley musician Pedro C. Saldana has got a song in his heart for San Benito.
The singer-songwriter has been performing rock n’ roll, blues, and conjunto music since the tender age of 14 when a friend recruited him to sing in a band.
Saldana said he’d been inspired by a cousin, Baldemar Huerta on his mother’s side, who often practiced singing and playing his guitar. Huerta would later become internationally known a Freddy Fender.
Fender would garner a number of awards including a Grammy Hall of Fame award, recognitions from the Country Music Association, and the ALMA The Ritchie Valens Pioneer Award, among others.
“A lot of people didn’t believe in Freddy. When I heard him sing and heard his music, I knew that sooner or later he would make it in the music business,” Saldana said about his cousin.
Saldana has written a song called Down in San Benito and is seeking the City of San Benito’s assistance to produce the song.
Saldana’s bid for support from the City of San Benito would require more according to City Manager Manuel De La Rosa.
