Despite being less than a month into their season, the San Benito baseball team has already had a full season’s worth of ups and downs.
Just days after sweeping the First Annual San Benito Baseball Classic Tournament, going 5-0 to claim the gold, the ’Hounds were dismantled by the Los Fresnos Falcons in their district opener. Their overall record of 7-5 was reached by way of a seven-game winning streak that started immediately following four consecutive losses to start the season.
“I think as a team, our goal should be to continue to get better every game,” said head coach Ramiro Partida. “We didn’t play very well against Los Fresnos, but hopefully we can continue to get better as the season goes on.”
In the 4-1 loss to Fresnos on Tuesday, San Benito struggled to get on base throughout the game and managed only two hits in 24 at-bats. It was a far cry from the offensive explosion the team compiled during the weekend tournament.
The Greyhounds got the tournament started with a 5-3 victory over Donna on Thursday. On Friday, San Benito continued to dominate with an 8-3 victory over Hidalgo followed by a 12-4 thumping of La Grulla. The home team closed out the tournament with an even more convincing 11-1 victory against La Grulla again before coming full circle with a 12-4 beat down of Donna in the championship game.
“The tournament showed how good we can be when we concentrate and focus on the task at hand,” added Partida. “We played some really good baseball and we need to continue to build on that performance.”
While the district season started with a loss, there is plenty of optimism among the team as they have shown glimpses of supreme talent. Armando Hernandez currently leads the team in hits with 15 while Mauricio Padilla leads the team with 15 RBIs and five extra-base hits.
