After seeing their 10-game win streak come to a halt last week, the San Benito Lady ’Hounds got back on track with two impressive victories this week.
San Benito dominated Raymondville in a non-district clash to the tune of 10-0 last Thursday, then took it a step further with a 14-0 beat down of district foe Brownsville Hanna. With the two shutouts, San Benito has now held their opponents scoreless in 11 of their 16 games, allowing a total of 23 runs while putting up a whopping 150 runs of their own.
“We know what we’re capable of and the talent level we have,” said head coach Elias Martinez. “To rebound from a tough loss the way we did is a good sign and now we just have to build on that momentum as we close out the season.”
With Martinez back at the helm, San Benito is expected by many to make another deep run in the playoffs while getting back their reputation as the top program in the Valley. Martinez called the loss to Los Fresnos last week a “disappointing early set back” but the coach believes the team will continue to improve as the they get acclimated to Martinez and his coaching staff.
Now San Benito prepares to ride into their biggest game of the early season against fellow contenders Harlingen High with a mountain of momentum.
“Our district is probably the toughest in the Valley and for us to be where we expect to be, we have to take care of teams like Harlingen and Los Fresnos. It will be a great measuring stick for us because Harlingen High has been impressive early on, but so have we. It will be a fun game for sure.”
The Lady Cardinals come to town next Tuesday, March 15 as San Benito kicks off the final six game stretch of the season. While the race for the 32-6A crown is still wide open, the Lady ’Hounds early loss to Los Fresnos has Martinez and his staff feeling the urgency.
“The important thing to us as coaches is that we have established our expectations and that we never get complacent,” added Martinez. “We still have a lot of things to clean up, but I’m completely confident we’ll get there.”
