An interim superintendent has been appointed to lead the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District.

Theresa Servellon, a former teacher, school principal and director of federal programs with SBCISD, is taking over the seat of former Superintendent Nate Carman.

The district board of trustees accepted Carman’s resignation during the Tuesday, March 8 meeting and appointed Servellon after meeting in a closed-door session.

In a brief statement, Carman said he enjoyed his tenure with the district. “I want to thank the SBSCD board, the community, the employees and the students, ” he said. “It’s bittersweet. I had a great four and a half years here and I feel I am leaving the district in pretty good shape.”

According to a concerned citizen who spoke during the public comments phase of the meeting, Carman took the reins of a district that was about to be taken over by the Texas Education Agency.
Janie Lopez, the board vice-president, said everybody really appreciated the work Carman did for the district.

Orlando Lopez said Carman helped turn the district around and thanked him as a parent and as a trustee.
Carman has taken a similar job with the Socorro ISD in El Paso County.

Within minutes of accepting Carman’s letter of resignation, board president Ricardo Moreno moved to appoint Servellon as the district’s interim superintendent.

The vote was 6-0.

He made another motion to authorize negotiating a contract with Servellon.

According to her biography online, Servellon has 34 years of experience in education, holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and finance from Texas State University and began her career as an early childhood teacher with SBCISD.

She also taught first and second grade, served as elementary school principal and was promoted to director of secondary instructional implementation and became director of federal programs.
