Slowly but surely, things are starting to shake up in the area’s political landscape.
As election season draws near and filing periods remain open for municipal and school district elections in San Benito, Rio Hondo and Los Fresnos, two mayoral candidates have filed for their candidacy.
According to city officials, Place 4 Rio Hondo City Commissioner Joe Lopez has filed in the mayor’s race and Gloria Barrientos, Pl. 2 Commissioner, has filed for reelection. Current Mayor Alonzo Garza is said to be planning a campaign for his reelection; however, he has reportedly yet to file. No other candidates have filed as of presstime.
The field of candidates in the Rio Hondo ISD elections has not changed from what was last reported. Four spots are open for the school board elections, including Pl. 1, a two-year unexpired term as well as Pl. 5, 6, and 7, which are all four-year full terms. The incumbents are Pl. 1 Noe Alaniz, Jr., Pl. 5 Tomas Gomez, Pl. 6 Manuel Flores, Jr., and Pl. 7 Thomas Wiesman, who as of Monday was the only candidate to file.
