The San Benito Lady Greyhounds’ Varsity Volleyball Team earned its second victory in District 32-6A, once again against Brownsville Hanna in their home gym last Saturday.
Hanna did take the first set, but the resilient Lady ‘Hounds finished the Lady Eagles off, getting three straight sets.
The scores were 18-25, 25-14, 25-18, and 25-11.
It appeared that Hanna was well on its way to getting another set, leading 4-1. But San Benito clawed back tying its foe several times, the last tie at 6-6.
The Lady Eagles just didn’t have an answer for San Benito’s Annalise Rodriguez, who served up multiple points. Hanna got stuck at 11 points and just never recovered.
“Today really showed that our team really wanted the win to hopefully make the playoffs,” said senior libero Hayden Rodriguez. “We’re really dedicated to each other. We had a really rough season a year ago, but our coach (Ruby Medina) gives us the tools to produce and get better.”
San Benito improved to 13-17 on the year with the victory.
The win put San Benito’s district record at 2-3 ahead of Hanna, which fell to 0-4.
As far as district, Los Fresnos still had the top spot with a 3-0 record followed by both Harlingen and Brownsville Veterans Memorial with identical 3-2 marks.
The second half of the district schedule began against Hanna so San Benito will once again have to contend with the top teams the rest of this month before the postseason begins in late October.
Despite being swept by each of their district opponents, the Lady ‘Hounds stayed close in several of their matches.
“We play as a family; we look to each other and even when things may be down, we try to pick each other up. We’re going to make mistakes, but we tell one another to shrug it off. We’re going to be fine, and our coaches do have a lot to do with that,” said sophomore outside hitter Annalise Rodriguez.
Hayden Rodriguez added, “I’ve been playing for a while (for this program) and got to experience the playoffs my sophomore year and would like to go back.”
Rodriguez had 12 kills, followed by Hayden Rodriguez with nine kills.
The sophomore turned in 27 service points and the senior, 19, respectively.
The duo also were tops among SBHS players in digs as Hayden earned 20 and Annalise 17, respectively.
The last two San Benito district matches will be played at Veterans on Oct. 21 and then at Harlingen on Oct. 25.
