The San Benito Greyhounds had the second-best team to compete at the District 32-6A Cross Country Meet at San Benito High School, and in the process qualified to compete at the regional meet.
There were 32 competitors in the 5K event that circled around San Benito High School and adjacent Bobby Morrow Stadium; three San Benito runners finished in the top 10, helping the team score well.
Joe Ibarra finished third with a time of 17.14.5, followed by Aaron Rostro at sixth with a time of 17:42.4, and Kevin Martinez in ninth place with a time of 17:59.1.
Jordan Arredondo was 12th with a time of 18:15.1, Jon Montemayor 21st with a time of 19:11.8, and Josiah Rivera 22nd with a time of 19:19.1.
San Benito’s second-place finish with 51 points was ahead of Los Fresnos (56), Brownsville Hanna (95), and Brownsville Veterans Memorial (132).
Harlingen claimed the district title with 34 points.
The top 10 individuals and the top three teams qualified for the Regional Meet scheduled for Oct. 21. The site is Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Dr. Jack Dugan Family Soccer and Track Stadium, 701 E. Nile Dr.
In the junior varsity (5K) and freshman (2 miles) events, San Benito also finished second. The top JV runner was Jesus Millan, who finished fifth with a time of 20:10.0, and Lorenzo Machuca took sixth with a time of 20:15.1.
Freshmen runners Nathan Cervantes finished third with a time of 12:26.6, Gabriel De Leon fourth with a time of 12:51.1, and Tejay Anguiano ninth with a time of 13:38.2.
On the girls’ side, the SBHS varsity team finished fifth, respectively. The district champion was Harlingen.
There were 30 runners in the 5K event.
Among the Lady Greyhounds to compete and their times were Madisann Murillo (23rd, 25:01.1), Alexia Delgado (24th, 25:01.9), Annabella Garza (28th, 27:19.9), Yadhira Hernandez (29th, 28:58.2) and Rebecca Sanchez (30th, 29:18.4).
In the JV event, three teams competed. SBHS was not among them.
In the freshman two-mile event that had 20 runners, SBHS’s Neveah Rivera was seventh with a time of 15:41.2, and Sophia Lopez was ninth with a time of 16:15.5.
