San Benito High School is the site of the District 32-6A Cross Country Meet on Saturday.
Among the teams competing are Harlingen, Los Fresnos, Brownsville Veterans Memorial, and Brownsville Hanna.
Both San Benito coaches, Sonia White (girls) and Jose Torres (boys), said their respective seasons began in August. With invitationals now behind them, the teams have gained valuable experience.
“Our main focus right now is continued improvement. We’re building a strong foundation for the future, and I’m proud of how this group shows up when they can, supports each other, and are making an effort to run each race better,” White said. “This year, I have a really young team. We’re still gaining experience and building depth.”
One of the most impressive things about the Lady ‘Hounds is that three of five runners also compete in sports while running cross country.
“They’ve been balancing multiple commitments, which really shows their work ethic and love for competing,” White said.
The Lady ‘Hounds recently competed in events at the varsity and sub-varsity levels in Donna and Sharyland.
Among the girls who have competed for SBHS are Lilly Avalos, Alexia Delgado, Annabella Garza, Yadhira Hernandez, Sophia Lopez, Analie Mosqueda, Madisann Murillo, Neveah Rivera, Rebecca Sanchez, and Melanie Sosa.
Unlike the girls, Torres had a full varsity boys’ squad competing in August events in McAllen and Harlingen.
Among the varsity runners have been Jordan Arredondo, Victor Barrientos, Joe Ibarra, Kevin Martinez, Jon Montemayor, Josiah Rivera, and Aaron Rostro.
“Our team has been working hard all season. I am proud of their times and have looked to improve every time out,” Torres said.
Lady ‘Hounds look to snap three-match skid
The San Benito Lady Greyhound Varsity Volleyball Team have reached a point in their season where they have suffered consecutive losses in District 32-6A play.
After earning a 1-1 district record by beating the Brownsville Hanna Lady Eagles and losing at home to the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons, San Benito lost to the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Lady Chargers (3-0) and Harlingen Lady Cardinals (3-0).
The Lady ‘Hounds are competitive, but fall late in their sets. Against Veterans, they lost 25-11, 25-21, 25-22. At home against Harlingen, the scores were 25-19, 25-17, 25-15.
The last loss puts the Lady ‘Hounds in a precarious situation with a 1-3 district record, still ahead of Hanna, which is 0-3, but now trailing Harlingen (2-2)
Los Fresnos is undefeated at 3-0, followed by Veterans Memorial (3-1).
Senior Genesis Meza leads San Benito in blocks with 26, followed by sophomore Kalista Olivares (21). Meza is also averaging three blocks per set, a team high.
Senior Hayden Rodriguez leads in digs per set with 5.4, followed by Annalise Rodriguez (3.5).
San Benito’s next district match is once again against Hanna, this time at home, Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
