With the second week of October here, the San Benito Greyhounds will finally start competing in District 32-6A games for the next five weeks, with a bye week in between.
This week they travel to Brownsville ISD’s Sams Stadium to take on the Hanna Golden Eagles. It will be the first high school football game played at the historic stadium since undergoing a $3.1 million renovation to accommodate collegiate football games for the University of Texas-RGV Vaqueros, who will utilize the facilities in the future, according to Brownsville ISD.
Sams Stadium was constructed in 1957.
San Benito’s opponent, Hanna enter with a 2-4 mark. The Eagles last week lost to the Mission Veterans
Memorial Patriots, 42-19.
The ’Hounds enter the district opener after losing 41-3 to the Carthage Bulldogs of East Texas in a game played at a neutral site in Bay City.
District 32-6A is made up of only five teams, therefore, only four games will be played.
San Benito is the only district team that enters play with a winless record at 0-6. The Los Fresnos Falcons and Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers are the only undefeated teams at 6-0.
Hanna has a better record than the Harlingen Cardinals, who are 1-5, respectively.
The ‘Hounds have struggled to consistently produce offensively. They have scored 37 points, far less than Hanna’s 107 offensive point production.
By comparison, Veterans (272 points) and Los Fresnos (267 points) haven’t had trouble finding the end zone this season.
The ‘Hounds’ defense has allowed 218 points so far, just a few more than Harlingen’s 214 points allowed.
Like last year, San Benito needs victories against district foes like Hanna and Harlingen to give the ’Hounds a chance to qualify for the postseason.
“Those district games are about to come up, and we want to make sure we are at our best,” San Benito Head Coach Dan Gomez said. “But also, anytime we’re on the field, we want to win no matter what time of year it is. The kids have continued to work hard and out on their time to want to win.”
After the Hanna game, the ‘Hounds will then host Los Fresnos on Friday, Oct. 17 followed by a well-needed bye the following week before traveling to Brownsville again for a game against Veterans on Halloween night.
The district finale will be at Bobby Morrow Stadium for the annual Battle of the Arroyo against Harlingen on Nov. 7.
The ‘Hounds’ last game against Carthage went the way of the pass, producing about 290 yards through the air. Four touchdowns were scored against the San Benito defense.
To their credit, the ‘Hounds allowed just over 100 total yards rushing and one TD against five runners.
Carthage used an offensive balanced attack on the ground and in the air to gain its fifth non-district victory. Like San Benito, the Bulldogs had yet to play in a district game.
Despite the lopsided loss, the outcome was far better than the 56-0 Carthage earned against San Benito last year.
Carthage, which won a Class 4A Division II championship last year, has won 10 state titles since 2008.
