HARLINGEN, TX —The San Benito Greyhounds got an early glimpse of how they will fare against some of their district foes as they participated in the Rio Grande Valley Golf Coaches Association/Los Fresnos Invitational Golf Tournament at Treasure Hills Golf Course.

San Benito (397-372—769) finished third among four teams that included the tournament winner, Harlingen South (321-317—638), second-place Los Fresnos (362-358—720), and fourth-place Harlingen (399-391—790). It was a two-day tournament held on Friday and Saturday, September 26-27; the weather conditions were sunny and breezy, with winds of 7-10 mph.

It helped San Benito’s Jay Tamez secure third place and a medal with scores of 84-78—162. He was the team’s only medalist, as four other San Benito golfers finished in the top 20, respectively. They included Sean Garza (104-92—196, tied for 11th place), Mario Landin (105-100—205, 14th place), Felix Sauceda (104-106—210, 16th place), and Christan Gomez (117-102—219, 17th place).

Los Fresnos beats San Benito
The San Benito Lady Greyhound Volleyball team suffered its first District 32-6A loss, this one at home to the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons last Saturday.

Los Fresnos prevailed by 25-9, 25-12, 25-22 scores.

To the Lady ’Hounds’ credit, despite being down 0-2 in sets, they played admirably in the final third set. They took a 1-0 lead, and through solid team play, numerous backcourt digs, and perfectly placed kills, they stayed ahead of the Lady Falcons. Four times throughout the match, San Benito had a five-point lead, the final time at 18-13.

Los Fresnos inched its way back, taking its first lead at 20-19, and went on to victory.

The loss leaves San Benito at 1-1, tied for fourth place with Harlingen, still ahead of Brownsville Hanna (0-3), but behind leaders Los Fresnos (2-0) and Brownsville Veterans Memorial (2-1).

The Lady ’Hounds play another Saturday match on Oct. 4 at Veterans Memorial, starting at 12 p.m. The Lady Chargers were also swept by Los Fresnos in district play.
