The San Benito Greyhounds couldn’t take advantage of the visiting Austin Westlake Chapparals’ slow start as they lost, 66-0, last week in their home opener at Bobby Morrow Stadium.

The ‘Hounds only trailed by a touchdown after one quarter before the Chaps got going offensively. San Benito, however, struggled to move the ball despite having moments of brilliance. The home team, after getting a few first downs, couldn’t sustain drives long enough.

San Benito was either stuffed on run plays or its passing routes didn’t have time to develop quickly enough with junior quarterback Albert Gonzalez under center.

One of the best plays came on third down with a 16-yard pass to freshman Nelson Ratliff near midfield.
The Chaps defenders were tenacious as they were in on more than 30 solo tackles.

Gonzalez was hurried five times, but on the bright side, San Benito’s offensive line only allowed one sack.
Once Westlake got going on offense, it gained more than 500 yards, with five rushing and two passing touchdowns scored.

Sebastian Henault had three rushing TDs, all of them from the San Benito one-yard line.

Chaps quarterbacks Rees Wise and Austin Knox combined to pass for 268 yards on 18-of-22 completions.

The ‘Hounds now take on the Laredo United Longhorns in an away game at the Laredo Student Activity Center, Friday, Sept. 12.

They beat San Antonio Warren, 35-7, and lost last week to Boerne, 35-31.

San Benito is still looking to get its first win as it continues to play out the non-district portion of its schedule through October.

The ‘Hounds will have two consecutive home games against Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (Sept. 19) and Weslaco (Sept. 26).
