BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS—The one-run, extra innings victory against the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers that the San Benito Greyhound Baseball Team earned a few weeks ago didn’t repeat itself the second go round.

Both pitchers turned in a stellar performance when they dueled in San Benito, but the second time in Brownsville was a hitters’ delight.

The ‘Hounds had five hits, but the Chargers doubled-up and earned 10 that helped them secure a 6-5 home win on Tuesday.

Justin Baez and Omar Bravo each earned two hits, and Gabriel Covarrubias smacked one hit. Five different ‘Hounds players scored runs.

But the fortunes changed for San Benito as two consecutive losses in District 32-6A play has the team in third place with a 3-4 record. San Benito lost to the Los Fresnos Falcons, 9-2, last week. Veterans Memorial improved to 3-5, but it’s still in fourth place.

The ‘Hounds are still looking at a postseason berth, but they will have their hands full when they host the Harlingen Cardinals in their district finale Friday.

Harlingen lost to Los Fresnos, 7-0, putting the ’Cards in second place as Los Fresnos is in first.

SOCCER HONORS
Two San Benito Lady Greyhound soccer players earned first-team all-district honors. That distinction went to Gianna Garza, who placed on the first team as a defender. Teammate Valeria Soto placed among the first team midfielders.

Two other Lady ’Hounds notched second team spots. They were Dina Lopez as a midfielder, and Abril Soto as a forward.

A bevy of San Benito players were named to the honorable mention team. They were defenders Jeslyn Rosalez, Amy Herrera, Arlene Montoya, and Liennai Allen; midfielders Hailey Guerrero and Camila Guajardo, forward Mayeli Rodriguez, and goalkeeper Seiri Salas.

GIRLS’ GOLF
San Benito senior golfer Krysta Serrata competed as a medalist at the Class 6A Region IV Tournament in San Antonio, April 14-15.

She turned in a performance of 96-104—200 during two days of play at Brackenridge Golf Course.
She finished with the 71st best score. There were 94 girls who competed.

The Los Fresnos girls finished ninth out of a field of 16 qualifying teams. They had a team score of 336-349–685. Avy Martinez (78-81–159) had the best individual score for the team, and 22nd best score overall.
