When it came time for the San Benito Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors to hire a new Executive Director to replace the departing Michelle Guerra Velez, the board didn’t have far to look.
Included among the applicants was someone within their ranks, and someone homegrown. On paper, Alma Flores, a former Chamber ambassador, is a teen, but possesses the poise and maturity of an adult twice her age.
At 19, the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley International Business major and San Benito resident was hired to head the San Benito Chamber and has already been put to the test, leading the effort to successfully execute this year’s Resaca City Bike Tour, which was held earlier this month.
Flores is also no stranger to the business community. While most people her age are focused on school and their social lives, Flores earned her cosmetology license and is a practicing cosmetologist. She even approached the San Benito Chamber and became one of its valued ambassadors.
“I am profoundly honored to serve as the Executive Director of the San Benito Chamber of Commerce. My journey into community service began at the age of 14, driven by a deep passion for making a meaningful difference, not only in San Benito but also in communities beyond. Over the years, I have had the privilege of organizing and hosting numerous events that bring people together and celebrate the unique spirit of community involvement,” Flores remarked.
“Starting my journey with the Chamber as an ambassador was truly transformative. It allowed me to immerse myself in the vibrant tapestry of our local community through volunteering, participating in ribbon cuttings, and supporting local businesses. Each experience, both within and outside of San Benito, fueled my enthusiasm and commitment, reinforcing my belief in the power of collaboration and engagement across communities,” she added.
Flores continued by explaining that when the opportunity arose to apply for the Executive Director opening, she embraced it wholeheartedly, adding that the Chamber has been instrumental in shaping her path, and that she’s deeply grateful for the trust and support from those who believe in her vision and potential.
“Stepping into this leadership role is both humbling and inspiring, and I am committed to serving with passion, dedication, and integrity,” she said.
“As someone born and raised in San Benito, I carry a profound love for our city and its people. My vision as Executive Director is to foster an environment where businesses flourish, partnerships thrive, and every individual feels empowered to contribute to our collective success. I am dedicated to creating initiatives that drive economic growth, inspire innovation, and strengthen the bonds that unite us as a community,” she explained.
Flores went on to describe her board, ambassadors, and local partners as “incredible” and their support as “unwavering.” “I am excited to lead efforts that will honor San Benito’s rich heritage while embracing new opportunities for progress. Together, we can build a brighter future—one rooted in collaboration, resilience, and the shared pride we all have for our beloved city,” she concluded.
Flores, the Chamber Board of Directors, Ambassadors, and volunteers now set their focus on the upcoming Sabor de San Benito, spotlighting local eateries. The event is being held at the ABC Event Center, 923 E Stenger St, San Benito, on May 1, 2025. Tickets are $25 per person. For inquires about this event or the Chamber in general, call the Chamber office at (956) 626-2559.
Flores is the daughter of Felix Flores and Alma Cantu of San Benito and has five brothers of varying ages.
