RIO HONDO, TEXAS —The Bobcat Varsity Baseball Team played in a District 32-3A game for the first time in nearly two weeks after traveling to Santa Rosa.
On Wednesday, the Bobcats suited up for only their second district game since losing to the Lyford Bulldogs, 11-1, on March 21. They played a non-district game in between, but lost to the Hidalgo Pirates, 4-0.
The district loss to Lyford had the Bobcats at 0-1, but in third place. Lyford was alone in first place with a clean 3-0 mark. The Raymondville Bearkats were in second place at 2-1 after losing to Lyford on Monday by a 3-2 score.
The Bobcats had a 12-7 season record due to the outstanding offensive play of several hitters.
Junior Marcus Flores is hitting safely in half of his at-bats as his whopping .538 batting average attests. Flores has 11 hits.
Among the team leaders in hits are Juan Padilla (batting average .476) with 20, senior Ruben Castellanos (BA .381) with 16 hits, and junior Christopher Galvan (BA .412) with 14 hits.
Padilla leads Rio Hondo with 19 stolen bases, with senior teammates Caleb Sandoval (18 stolen bases), and Julian Serna (17 stolen bases).
Rio Hondo played at Progreso on Friday.
Lady ’Cats gain victory
The Rio Hondo Lady ’Cats earned their second District 32-3A victory of the season after run-ruling the Progreso Lady Red Ants this week.
The 21-0 score was by far the largest margin of victory this season for the Lady ’Cats’ Varsity Softball Team.
The Lady ’Cats, whose season record is 3-10, also had wins against Valley View (10-9) and Grulla (13-10).
Rio Hondo has a 2-2 district record after also notching a win by forfeit to the Santa Rosa Lady Warriors on March 21. The district losses came against the Lyford Lady Bulldogs, 16-0, and the Raymondville Lady Bearkats, 20-19.
Rio Hondo will play their fourth district game when the ladies host the Lyford this evening, Friday.
