HARLINGEN, TEXAS—Despite losing on a walk-off homerun to the Lady Cardinals on Tuesday, there was no quit in the San Benito Lady Greyhounds during their District 32-6A away game.
The diamond version of the Battle of the Arroyo went the way of the Redbirds when junior Amaris Gomez belted a two-run homer in the final inning.
Harlingen took a 3-0 lead after one inning when two different batters smacked back-to-back homeruns each.
It wasn’t until the fifth inning that San Benito tied the game at 3.
The Lady ‘Hounds got on the scoreboard when sophomore Megan Medina flied out to left field, but drove in the first off a tag to third base.
Then, in the same inning, sophomore Jewelianah Mares earned a double to left field, scoring two runners.
Despite the homerun early and late in the game, San Benito sophomore pitcher Arielle Hernandez played especially well in the middle innings. After having her first strikeout in the first inning, she had more control of her pitches, getting another strikeout in the fourth and two Ks in each of the fifth and sixth innings.
Harlingen had eight hits.
Despite the early deficit, San Benito played a competitive game, having its opportunities to score. The team had five hits, and left six runners on base.
The victory improved Harlingen’s district first-place record at 4-0. San Benito fell to 2-2. The other district loss came against the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Lady Chargers at home, 1-0.
The Lady ‘Hounds have district victories against the Brownsville Hanna Lady Eagles (19-0) and the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons (21-2).
San Benito will play at Hanna on Friday.
