An International Women’s Day walk is taking place here on Sunday, March 9 from 3-9 p.m. The starting location has yet to be determined.
Event organizers invite women to advocate to defend their rights, bodies, and future, as well as other causes from Palestine and Ukraine to Haiti and Congo. “I believe marching for women’s equality coincides with decolonization and the liberation of oppressed women in Palestine, Haiti, the DRC Sudan and many other countries,” stated event organizer Sandra Ramirez.
A major tagline for the event is “unite and resist,” a call to action that resonates strongly with Ramirez. “To me, ‘Unite and Resist’ means to get to know your neighbors, your community, and resist the descent into fascism that our current administration is sliding us into,” stated Ramirez.
Ramirez added that she hoped this event will inspire young women such as her daughter. “I hope to be an example to my daughter that being a woman doesn’t mean you are less than a man. It doesn’t mean we are superior either. It means we are equal and deserve equal rights and to be treated fairly,” said Ramirez.
Registration for the event is on the Women’s March website, action.womensmarch.com. Those who register will receive more details via email.
The event is part of the greater Women’s March organization, which works to unite women and fights to “end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression,” according to their official website. The organization is responsible for many events and protests in recent years, including the 2017 Women’s March on Washington. According to the website, it is the “largest single-day protest” in American history, with an estimated five million people participating not just in Washington, but across the globe.
