San Benito CISD was notified last week of a traffic accident involving a Career and Technology Education (CTE) teacher in a District vehicle.
According to a SBCISD press release disseminated shortly after the incident was reported, the CTE teacher was accompanying the San Benito High School Skills USA Team as they competed at the State Competition in Corpus Christi last weekend.
According to District officials, the teacher was the driver of the District SUV and was traveling to pick up students at the competition. As the teacher was en route, another vehicle rear-ended the District SUV, officials cited.
“There were no San Benito CISD students or additional staff members in the district SUV at the time of the accident,” read the press release.
Corpus Christi law enforcement responded to the accident and assessed the medical condition of the CTE teacher. EMS transport was provided to a local hospital for further medical observation. No serious injuries were sustained with the teacher, noted District officials.
San Benito CISD administrators at the state conference were on hand to determine the support needed for the teacher, the students, and the staff attending the event. All students and staff are safe at this time, according to the SBCISD.
The press release concluded by noting that the state conference continued on through the weekend and that further updates will be made available if needed.
This comes on the heels of a separate incident occurring on March 21 of this year, when the SBCISD responded to a traffic accident at the intersection of Rangerville and Jimenez Roads involving a district bus.
Emergency Management Services (EMS) transported two students to Valley Baptist Medical Center to receive pediatric medical attention. The parents of those students were notified and were present with those two students at the hospital, stated district officials in a press release.
The San Benito CISD’s Police Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and City of San Benito and Harlingen Fire Departments all responded and assessed the situation for all students and staff on the district bus.
San Benito CISD Administrators for Operations and Safety coordinated with the Rangerville Elementary Principal to contact all the parents and families of the students riding the district bus. After safety and medical assessments were conducted by the first responders, students that were cleared were released to their parents on site, the press release noted.
An additional San Benito CISD bus was used to provide transportation to those students that needed final transport to their homes. The parents and families of those students were aware of the changes in bus transportation, officials concluded.
ANGELA G. LEAL ELEMENTARY LOCKDOWN
In another unrelated San Benito School District incident, San Benito CISD Safety and Security Officials were notified afternoon by the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office to request a lockdown at Angela G. Leal Elementary School.
The lockdown was requested as the law enforcement was preparing to serve an arrest warrant in the local vicinity of the school.
According to SBCISD press release, this was done as a safety precaution for all students and staff of Angela G. Leal Elementary during the time of the law enforcement action.
“San Benito CISD responded accordingly and implemented our safety lockdown procedures as practiced by students and staff regularly,” read the press release.
The Cameron County Sheriff’s Office shared with San Benito CISD Safety and Security Officials that the suspect was apprehended with no incident.
All students and staff were safe and secure throughout the duration of the lockdown. At that point of the notification, the lockdown was lifted and the normal school operations continued for the day, read the district’s press release.
“We appreciate the support and dedication of our local law enforcement as they maintained order and safety for our Angela G. Leal Elementary community,” read a Facebook post on the district’s page.
“Thank you to the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office and the San Benito CISD Safety and Security Officials for your prompt and professional assistance,” the post concludes.
