SBCISD earns ‘A’ rating

San Benito CISD officials have received an “A” rating for “Superior Achievement” under Texas’ School FIRST financial accountability rating system.

As the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) Financial Compliance website indicates, the state’s school financial accountability rating system – better known as the School Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) – ensures that Texas public schools are held accountable for the quality of their financial management practices and that they improve those practices.

The system is designed to encourage Texas public schools to better manage their financial resources to provide the maximum allocation possible for direct instructional purposes.

The District’s 2022-2023 “A” FIRST rating is based on the 2021-2022 school year financial management data that earned San Benito CISD a district numerical score of 98.

Statewide, school districts were scored on a total of 20 indicators such as (1) whether the school district was in compliance with the payment terms of all debt agreements at fiscal yearend and (2) if the number of days of cash on hand and current investments in the general fund for the school district were sufficient to cover operating expenditures.

Monica Mata, the District’s Chief Financial Officer, explained that the primary goal of School FIRST is to achieve quality performance in the overall management of a school district’s financial resources.

“The state’s school finance system’s accounting is complex. The Schools FIRST accountability rating helps assure that Texas school districts are held accountable for effectively and efficiently maximizing each taxpayer dollar while focusing on student instruction,” added Mata.
